Jump Starting a Battery

The above video will illustrate the proper way to jump a batter that I will explain. I will also give a few tip on how to fix your battery that the video does not explain. In your maintenance kit you will want to include the proper size wrench for the battery terminal cables.

Directions:
Step #1: Connect the positive lead on the dead battery to the positive lead on the live battery.

Step #2: Connect the negative lead on the LIVE battery post to the frame or engine block on the DEAD battery.

Step #3: Start the LIVE battery's vehicle first. Wait a few minutes to allow the current to flow to the dead battery. It is not necessary to rev the engine.

Step #4: If the car starts, remove the cables in the reverse order that they were connected.

*If the car does not start then check the connections. Acid build up can occur around the post. Sometimes this build up is not visible. Disconnect the cables and use a wire brush to clean the cables and the posts. Tighten the clamps securely onto the post.

This is an example of a battery cleaner. One end is a wire brush to clean the cables and the other is a rounded end that cleans the posts with wire bristles.
